Pollution is increasingly becoming a public health priority. Historically, the taxi (black taxis and private hire vehicles) trade has had a limited choice of diesel vehicles to use. This has led to the fleet becoming a significant contributor to poor air quality in inner city areas.

With the pressure of improving local air quality and the establishment of Clean Air Zones, and the London Ultra Low Emission Zone, taxi operators will need to evaluate the suitability of their vehicles with regards to achieving mandatory vehicle emission standards.

The London taxi industry is preparing to play a vital role in the future in tackling London’s toxic air. The Mayor's Taxi and Private Hire Action Plan sets out how they intend to to establish the Capital's taxi fleet as the greenest in the world.

Clean Air Zones required by 2020

The cities required to have a clean air zones by 2020 are Birmingham, London, Leeds, Nottingham, Derby and Southampton, meaning all taxis and private hire will be effected in these areas, and will require meeting strict emissions standards.

LEZs and ULEZs

To tackle air pollution in our cities and built up areas, the Government has identified 37 cities with zones where air quality issues. In these cities plans are being introduced for Low Emission Zones (LEZs) Ultra Low Emission Zones (ULEZs). If vehicles entering the zones do not meet requirements they will be charged and fined.
